2010 GUIDELINES FOR THE SUBWAY CHALLENGE SERIES
There are now Four Divisions in the 2010 Subway Challenge Series-Competitive, Recreational, Walking, & Elite. Each division is unique. Participants in the Competitive Division are eligible for $ awards & merchandise awards along with receiving a special gift (In past years this has been a L/S embroidered T). In the competitive division you must complete a minimum of five races and we score your top seven races. Cash & gift certificate awards will be given to the top five men & women overall, top master, top grandmaster, and the top five in each of the following age groups: 13 & under, 14-18, 19-23, 24-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70 & over. In 2009 the prize structure was as follows:1st $300.00, 2nd $200.00, 3rd $125.00, 4th $100.00, 5th $75.00, Masters $75.00, & Grand Masters $75.00.
Participants in the Recreational Division will receive a special gift (In past years this has been a L/S embroidered T) for completing a minimum of 5 races in the Series, be eligible for door prizes at the banquet, and be able to track their points & compare with other runners in races completed during the racing season. The individual with the highest point total and most races completed will be recognized in both men & women.
Participants in the Walking Division will receive a special gift (In past years this has been a L/S embroidered T) for completing a minimum of 5 races in the Series, be eligible for door prizes at the banquet, and be able to track their point & compare with other walkers in races completed during the racing season. Top three overall and the top three in 10 year age groups will be recognized. 19 & under, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59. 60-69, 70 & over. In addition there will be a special weight loss category and the top three men & the top three women (total of six awards) will receive awards in both total lbs. lost and % of weight lost. (Participants will weigh in at their first Series event and again at the banquet at the end of the season.) Participants must be present at the banquet to win! There will be no double awards in the two weight loss categories. The walking division is based on the “honor” system and participants cannot run/walk-they must walk only.
Points in these three divisions are determined by how far in time you finish behind the leading Challenge Series participant in each event. Competitive & Recreational Divisions are figured together while the Walking division is figured on its own. You divide your time into the winning time (first convert both times to seconds) and multiply the results by the number of points available for that event. Men & women are figured separately. The Minimum points for any event are 300.
The fourth and final Division is the Elite Division. The Elite Division is designed for the serious competitive runner. Seven races will be designated Elite Events and the runners entered in the Elite Division will be scored on their 5 best race finishes of these eight events. The eight races are Barberton Community Foundation Jeep Davis 5K, Heath Warner Memorial 5K, Jackson Night Glow 5K, North Canton YMCA 5 Mile, Pro Football HOF Enshrinement Festival 5 Mile, Canalway Classic 5K, Alliance Rotary Castle Run 10K, & Perry Rotary Castle Run 5K. These shorter distances will not interfere with training for longer spring and fall events for the competitive runner. Scoring will be based on your finish position in relation to the other current entrants in your division. For example, in an Elite Event if elite participants finish overall in 1st, 4th, 5th, & 8th place their point total would be 1, 2, 3, & 4. Low total wins for your 5 best races of the seven Elite races. High scores will be thrown out if you run more than 5 events. In case of a tie going into the final event, finish place in the final event will determine finish order for the season. If two runners are tied for position and one does not run the final race of the seven, the runner who runs the final race will be determined the winner of the tie. Cash awards will be as follow: 1st place men & women $1500.00, 2nd Place $1000.00, 3rd Place $500.00, 4th Place 250.00, 5th Place $125.00, Masters $500.00, & Grand Masters $500.00. Age groups will be 29 & under, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, 70 & over. First will be $125.00. Total prize money is $10,250.00.
Competitors in all four divisions will also be eligible for the summer picnic for themselves and their family free of charge and to attend the banquet in December free of charge. (Family members of participants will be charged $10.00 for the banquet).
Races in the Series all 11 years will be scored on the basis of 320 points, Races 6-10 years 315 points, & races 3-5 years 310 points. 1st & second year events will be 300 points. North Canton YMCA will be scored on basis of 325 points as the largest event in 2009, Half marathons & up will have an added bonus of 15 points to their previously designated total, 10K events to less than a half marathon will receive an added bonus of 10 points to their previously designated total. Elite races will also receie an additional 10 bonus points added to the available points for these eight events for all competitive & recreational runners. When a race has several different distances available for competitors, Competitive Division runners are to run the longer distance to determine their point total. If a competitive runner or recreation runner runs the shorter distance they will receive an automatic 200 points for that event. The 200 automatic points are applicable to both the 10K & 5K at the Wooster event where there are three distances! Those who compete in a race as part of a relay team (half marathons) will also receive an automatic 200 points. As an encouragement to runners to participate in more Series events, 10 bonus points per race (maximum of 30 points) will be awarded for runners who complete between 8 & 10 events.
